Heywood

Overview

Heywood is a small service centre on the Fitzroy River. It is situated at an elevation of 27 metres amidst rolling green hills in an agricultural, pastoral and timbercutting district. Heywood is 357 kilometres west of Melbourne at the intersection of the Princes and Henty Highways.

History

Heywood is home to the National Heritage Landscape of Budj Bim (Lake Condah). The area is a large shallow lake formed at the edge of a lava flow.

Dating back thousands of years, the area shows evidence of a large, settled (not nomadic) Aboriginal community systematically farming eels for food and trade in what is considered to be one of Australia’s earliest and largest aquaculture ventures.
