Peterborough

Overview
Situated along the Great Ocean Road, Peterborough is set on Curdies Inlet, where the river meets the ocean. The seaside village offers boating, swimming, golf and excellent surf and river fishing, with the nearby Port Campbell National Park providing wonderful sight-seeing opportunities.
History
The section of coastline where Peterborough is located was quite inaccessible and so isolated that settlement was slow to begin. The township was surveyed in 1866 however the first house was not built until around 1873. The Curdies River flows out to sea at Peterborough and the limestone cliffs and ledges have proven hazardous with many ships coming to grief on the cliffs. Some of the most famous shiprecks were The Schomberg, The Children, and the Falls of Halladale 1908.
